How to Make Your Own Tinted Sunblock
Last year I did some experimenting with making my own sunblock, it was really easy and I carried the idea one step further and made it tinted too!
The most natural and broadest spectrum ingredient to use for sun protection is zinc oxide, the same mineral which gives Lily Lolo it’s SPF15 sun protection. The only problem is that its very whitening. Many people want to avoid the nasty chemical sunscreen filters like oxybenzone and use something natural on their skin (our largest body organ) but they don’t like the whiteness of it. If sunblock says its natural and it doesn’t look white then it’s using nano sized particles of zinc which penetrate through the skin and into our bodies. The long term effects of this is not fully understood yet.
So if you want to be sure of what you’re putting on your skin this summer and feel like experimenting just follow the recipe instructions from the link to the Wellness Mama website for the general recipe here
At the point you add the zinc oxide, also add the tint too. Start with just half the amount you have and see what the colour is like, you can keep adding more if you have darker skin.
You will have an even higher SPF and wider range of protection than if you used zinc oxide on its own.
If you use your usual foundation shade it will be too light, that’s why the sunblock tint is much darker than your skin tone but it gets diluted in the recipe. You can buy the tint for just $5 here
